Kevin Hammer of Boynton Beach, elected in November to serve as the president of the Florida State Golf Association, has begun his term leading the volunteer Executive Committee in guiding the association’s professional staff and more than 450 volunteers throughout the state.
He served on the Board of Directors since 2009 and was elected to the Executive Committee in 2013. Hammer spent the past two years serving as vice president.
“I’m, first and foremost, simply a fan of the FSGA,†Hammer said. “For over a century, preserving and protecting the game of golf throughout the state of Florida and beyond has been the mantra.
“The FSGA has grown exponentially over the years under the guidance of executive director Jim Demick and his highly competent team, and is now the most active state golf association in the country.â€
Hammer, a Florida native, has been affiliated with the FSGA since playing junior golf. He is a seven-time FSGA champion and has been a part of two Florida Cup teams. Hammer currently resides at Boynton Beach’s Club at Quail Ridge with his wife, Karen, and their three daughters, Alexa, Ava and Ella.
Hammer was born and raised in Boynton Beach, and got involved in the game at a young age, thanks to his father, Laurie, a former PGA Tour player and National PGA Club Professional champion. Hammer grew up playing, living and working at Delray Dunes Golf and Country Club, where his dad was the PGA Professional and Director of Golf for more than 40 years.
He graduated from the University of Florida, where he played for coach Buddy Alexander’s Gators, including the NCAA champions of the 1993-94 season. Hammer works as a senior vice president at Merrill Lynch, where he has been for more than 20 years.
“The state of Florida attracts, and is home to, an incredibly high number of knowledgeable golfers,†he said. “The FSGA has been the beneficiary of having hundreds of skilled volunteers and board members who are willing to give back to the game they love. With 107 years of history, we believe the FSGA is just getting started.â€
Tony Capano was elected as vice president, with Moe Gallant as secretary/treasurer. Steve Albright, Tara Joy-Connelly and Mike Miller all were elected as directors-at-large.
Kim Benedict, Brian Keenan, Therese Quinn, Mike Riley and Pete Williams were elected to the Board of Directors, while Chuck Phillips and Scott Schroeder were re-elected to the board.
