John Brodie, a National Football League MVP and sports broadcaster who later achieved success in golf by winning a PGA Tour Champions event, died last Friday. He was 90.
After a 17-year career playing quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers and a dozen years calling football and golf for NBC Sports, Brodie joined PGA Tour Champions in 1985. In 230 career starts, he posted 12 top-10 finishes, including a victory at the 1991 Security Pacific Senior Classic, defeating George Archer and Chi Chi Rodriguez in a playoff.
While playing quarterback at Stanford, Brodie had moonlighted for the university’s golf team, competing in two NCAA Championships between football seasons. He also played in 29 PGA Tour events during the NFL offseasons between 1959-61, making the cut in nine tournaments, and competed in two U.S. Opens (1959 and 1981). READ MORE
