U.S. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley hosted a dinner for prospective team members prior to last week’s Truist Championship outside Philadelphia, gathering at Whitemarsh Valley Country Club on Tuesday.
While there had been informal meetings since Bradley was named captain last July, the Philly confab was the first organized meeting with players, caddies and wives to start really discussing the Ryder Cup.
“We’ve been talking to the boys for over a year now,” Bradley said. “This was fun to get everyone together under one roof. We called it a dinner, but it was really sort of a get-together.”
At 38, Bradley will be the youngest American captain since Arnold Palmer was a playing captain in 1963. Bradley, who could potentially emulate Palmer as a playing captain, entered the Truist Championship 22nd in the Ryder Cup standings and noted, “I’ve got to play better than what I’m doing right now.” READ MORE
Billy Horschel’s Ryder Cup prospects took a hit when he announced he would undergo surgery on his right hip this week.
“It’s an unfortunate situation with so many great events left on the calendar, but this is a preventative measure,” Horschel posted on X. “I’m already itching to start rehab, get back to practicing, and I look forward to returning to the course sometime around late summer/early fall.”
Horschel, who withdrew from the Zurich Classic late last month, was 16th in the U.S. Ryder Cup standings entering the Truist Championship. READ MORE
When the PGA Championship kicks off this week at Quail Hollow Club, many eyes will once again be on Rory McIlroy, who will arrive in Charlotte, North Carolina, having completed the career Grand Slam by winning the Masters.
“I’m obviously going to feel more comfortable and a lot less pressure, and I’m also going back to a venue that I love,” McIlroy said last week, alluding to his four previous victories at Quail Hollow. “It probably will feel a little bit different. I probably won’t be quite as on edge as I have been for the last few years when I’ve been at major championships. I’ll probably be a little bit better to be around for my family, and I’ll be a little more relaxed. I think, overall, it will be a good thing.”
With his victory at Augusta National coming 11 years after his last major triumph, McIlroy tied the record for the longest all-time gap between major titles. “Defeating my own mind was sort of the big thing for me and getting over that hurdle,” he said. “Look, I’m just glad that it’s done. I don’t ever want to have to go back to that Sunday afternoon again. I’m glad that I finished the way I did, and we can all move on with our lives.” READ MORE
