Recent letters and articles have bemoaned the state of golf (“It’s Your Honor,” June 24, July 1 GGP). Of course, they are referring to professional touring golf and not Golf with a capital “G.” Golf isn’t just doing fine; it’s doing better than it has in years, perhaps the best it’s ever been. Participation is way up, especially for women, kids and minorities.
The gnashing of teeth over pro golf is a waste of time. There are the pro LIVers who claim that LIV is the best thing ever. Some are so rah-rah LIV that I suspect they are a Saudi bot. Without the LIV players, the PGA Tour is a farce, according to them. Others don’t care about LIV but dislike the TV coverage of the PGA Tour: too many ads, meaningless commentary and too much Tiger.
If you love LIV and think the PGA Tour no longer has all the best players, feel free to watch LIV, though that might be difficult with LIV’s TV coverage. Can’t stand the PGA Tour coverage? Don't watch and maybe the networks will get the hint that their product needs an overhaul.
What can you do instead? Just get out and play. Support public golf. Take a friend or kid who’s interested with you. Golf’s calling. The TV won’t miss you. Golf. It’s cool now. Who knew?
