Before supermodel Kim Alexis ever appeared on more than 500 magazine covers worldwide, with a record six Sports Illustrated swimsuit covers, she appeared on the golf stage at Lockport, New York.
Before she set sales and adoration afire worldwide, she set the practice range and golf course on fire at Lockport Town and Country Club north of Buffalo.
“I grew up loving, practicing and playing golf. I was 16 years old and my parents said, “You need to learn to play golf because your husband will want to play and you’ll need to know as well,” she said.
Before she would become a cover model, movie star and international fashion-runway regular, she was junior golfer Kim Alexis.
But as many golfers have found out, sometimes life gets in the way.
Her career arc is the stuff of fashion-modeling legend. At age 17, she was discovered by a New York talent agency and offered the chance to go to New York City and try out as a magazine cover model.
Already enrolled at the University of Rhode Island and intending to study pre-pharmacy and maybe even try out for the golf team, Alexis decided to take the modeling offer. Four days after arriving in the city, she landed her first magazine cover, on women’s fashion title Harper’s Bazaar.
“I was almost 18 when I went to New York City, where it was really hard to play golf and it was cold and crowded, with not many places to play. My game was good for about 2 years, and then I took a very long gap.”
