TaylorMade’s Spider franchise of putters includes a new identity with the GT family of four added to the lineup.
The four Spider models – the GT, GT Notchback, GT Rollback and GT Splitback – offer performance with contemporary construction, headlined by a Spider GT and its modern wing design and ultra-lightweight top plate.
“With Spider GT, we have created our most angular and most stable Spider ever using a new modern wing construction similar to other high-stability Spider putters of the past,” said Bill Price, TaylorMade’s senior director product creation, putters. “With the removal of weight from the center of Spider GT, we have unlocked higher MOI and more stability from every angle.”
The most striking feature of the Spider GT ($349) is the lightweight 145-gram top plate made from 6061 aluminum, which eliminates excess weight in the middle of the putter and carries a short sightline for alignment. Its open-frame, multi-material design features two 90-gram steel side weights that push 82 percent of the putter’s total weight to the perimeter. This creates stability on off-center strikes.
The color finishes for the top plate are silver, black and red. The Spider GT women’s model has a white top plate over light-blue wings and also features a three-dot sightline for alignment.
The GT has a firmer co-molded insert – manufactured of black TPU urethane with silver aluminum beams at a 45-degree angle designed to improve topspin – for improved forward roll and ball speed consistency across the face.
It comes with single-bend and short-slant hosel options. The short-slant design generates 21 degrees of toe hang for a more vertical angle, suiting players with moderate face rotation in the putting stroke. The single-bend hosel better fits players with a straight-back and straight-through putting motion.
The GT Notchback ($299) model blends traditional design with contemporary construction. Its CG is positioned the farthest forward and features a lightweight 6061 aluminum body combined with strategically placed 86-gram dual-tungsten weights on the outside heel and toe. Its data show that it produces the highest MOI ever created by a mid-size mallet Spider.
The GT Rollback ($299) is a classic half-moon design enhanced by a heavy tungsten rollbar for added perimeter weighting and increased stability. Its raised, curved center section is the same width of a golf ball, making it easier to center the ball in the address position.
The Rollback top design has a lighter anterior with a 232-gram cap crafted from anodized 6061 aluminum combined with an 80-gram tungsten stability bar that wraps around the back and side of the putter for added forgiveness and stability.
The GT Splitback ($299) features a refined 304-stainless steel construction with geometric shaping and urethane foam strategically injected inside the putter head to dampen vibrations and create better sound and feel. The split “winged” design allowed designers to redistribute mass around the perimeter of the putter in order to maximize MOI and stability.
The Splitback also incorporates one of the standout features of Spider X with True Path, TaylorMade’s ball alignment and stroke visualization aid. The contrasting white section, black sightline and arrow-shaped rear edge help golfers visualize their putting stroke and ball path before ever executing the putt.
