Adidas is trying to change the mindset that golf shoes need to look a certain way. With the silhouette of its new Rebelcross spikeless shoe – inspired by the Bauhaus movement of the early 1900s – the idea is to “capture the cross-section between streetwear style and a pin-seeker attitude.”
“Like anyone else when it comes to style, golfers want to have the chance to express themselves, and one of the ways they can do that is through their footwear,” said Masun Denison, the global footwear director for Adidas golf. “With Rebelcross, golfers will get elevated style and functionality that they’ll be impressed with, not only when they put them on but when they perform on the course.”
The Rebelcross is built around its comfortable and popular Yeezy last, with a versatile Gripmore outsole that provides a wear-anywhere combination of maximum traction on the course using Adiwear rubber that’s comfortable off the course.
“Versatility is important, giving the consumer what they need on the course and self-expression through style while off the course,” said June Cate, the Rebelcross lead designer.
While style and versatility were a focus for the design concept, the performance remains essential. They created a midsole that features a hybrid Lightstrike and Boost cushioning for lightweight feel, energy return and comfort. It also has a subtle thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) heel clip to provide stability and support when golfers need it.
The shoe’s upper combines rich, premium leather with recycled materials and comes with a one-year waterproof warranty. Its Bauhaus inspiration incorporates shapes, sharp lines and pops of color. It’s available in three colorways – black, white and what they call “Magic Grey” which has a shimmering bluish sheen – and retails for $160.
