In describing their new Milled Grind 3 wedges, TaylorMade technicians quickly tout their use of the company’s Raw face technology. The reason for doing so, they say, is clear: Tour professionals love how the clubs’ unplated surface material preserves consistent spin as it rusts over time while also providing better performance in wet conditions.
More commonly known as MG3s, these clubs also feature raised Micro-Ribs, which span the entire face and sit between the traditional grooves. This advance is designed to create an abrasive and textured surface area that further improves precision around the greens, especially on partial shots.
“Wedges have to be versatile and exacting, whether it’s a full swing from 100 yards, a touchy 15-yard pitch that needs to stop quickly, or any distance in between,” said Bill Price, head of product creation for putters and wedges for TaylorMade Golf. “With Milled Grind 3, we’ve designed a wedge that is capable of delivering optimal spin on every shot from every distance.”
To appeal to as broad a range of golfers as possible, the company offers MG3 in three bounce options.
The Low Bounce version is made to promote a smoother entry and exit of the club through the turf, with the leading edge sitting closer to the ground and a slight increase in camber. Added trail edge relief is included to make it easier to hit open-face finesse shots around the green.
As for a Standard Bounce wedge, it has been fashioned to increase playability and versatility, while the HB (for High Bounce) edition is for those with a steep angle of attack, or who play their rounds in softer conditions.
TaylorMade is also selling MG3s with a TW grind, in lofts of 56 and 60 degrees. This version is inspired by the grind Tiger Woods has used, with the 56-degree wedge boasting a dual sole with heavy heel relief and the 60-degree having extremely high bounce on the leading edge with a shave heel.
