It used to be that golfers in search of a higher flight apex in shots they hit with their woods needed to add loft or use a more “active shaft.” Yet those moves had a habit of adding spin that limited distance or led to bigger misses.
Enter the new Ascent shaft from Aldila, which is designed to counter those tendencies with what company engineers call an Impact Stabilization Zone. Located toward the tip, it uses an area of increased stiffness to stabilize the clubhead at impact while still preserving the shaft’s lively feel and higher launch angle as well as its ability to maximize energy impact at transfer.
The Ascent line has three models, starting with Ascent Wood-Red, a mid-launch, mid-low spin product that is heavier, stiffer and targeted for faster, stronger players like those who compete on the PGA Tour. More and more, players on that circuit are starting to put this puppy in play
Next up is Ascent Ultralight Wood. In addition to the Impact Stabilization Zone, this high-launch, mid-high spin version employs a technology called FlyDrive, which is made to maintain overall strength, stability and feel without adding weight.
Then, there is the Ascent Ultralight Hybrid, which is also designed to be a high-launch, mid-high spin shaft – but for that specific part of a player’s bag.
