Ahead of The 149th Open at Royal St George’s this July, you can now read our hole-by-hole course guide.
First laid out by Dr Laidlaw Purves in 1887, Royal St George’s retains many elements of its original design, with a number of holes completely unchanged.
One of the sternest tests on The Open rota, it traditionally has proven tough to score on. Of the past five Champion Golfers at the venue, Greg Norman is the only one to have recorded a winning total lower than 5-under par, posting a stunning 13-under aggregate of 267 in 1993 that remained a record score in the Championship for 23 years.
A par-70 layout, the Sandwich links is comprised of 12 par-4s, four par-3s and two par-5s, with stunning topography, a number of blind shots and glorious links design.
Darren Clarke famously triumphed when The Open was last played at Royal St George’s in 2011.
