OVERVIEW
For those who are lucky enough to have visited, it’s impossible not to be captivated by Portugal’s southern stretch of coastline. For golfers, it’s a destination which continues to deliver everything required for the ideal trip. The sunshine, the location, the golf courses … only in the Algarve do you get them all rolled into one perfect package.
There are some key ingredients which make the perfect golf holiday.
Quality, choice, variety, cost, accessibility, weather, accommodation, food and drink, culture, nightlife …
Depending on the demographic and the group, all of these factors will take on a different priority.
Some want to play as many top courses as possible in the time available. Others prefer a more balanced trip with some other activities in their time away from the course.
But is there anywhere else which ticks as many boxes as the Algarve?
As a holiday destination in its own right, the southern coast of Portugal’s year-round sunshine, natural beauty and seemingly endless miles of golden beaches act as a magnet for travellers.
But for golfers, the wide selection of incredible golf courses is the real pull – there are more than 40 of them, which are all within an hour’s drive of Faro airport.
Flights are frequent, inexpensive – and, importantly, short – from the UK and Ireland.
With average annual temperatures of 17.5˚C, more than 3,000 hours of sunshine every year and 150 miles of sandy beaches, mesmerising caves and viewpoints, with sparkling ocean rolling in from every turn, the region has a capacity to satisfy the soul.
So it’s little wonder the Algarve remains so popular and it’s easy to understand why families and non-golfers enjoy the region just as much.
Wonderful restaurants are waiting to be discovered and they serve a broad range of cuisines – the fresh seafood being an obvious highlight. And, the climate is ideal for producing the perfect high-quality wine to accompany those glorious meals.
A rich array of quality hotels and accommodation options are on offer and, with so many water-based activities – such as snorkelling, sailing, kayaking and scuba-diving – boredom is never a factor if lazing on a beautiful beach leaves you wanting more.
Away from the coast, the hills are perfect for hiking, cycling or rock climbing, and there is nature in abundance with reserves and national parks waiting to be enjoyed.
It’s a region which already has just about every box ticked for the ideal holiday. But for golfers, it cranks up a few notches when the exceptional wealth of courses becomes clear.
