PRESENTING
MEN’S AMATEUR
FIRST TEAM
Ludvig Åberg
Sweden/Texas Tech
Winner, Jones Cup Invitational
Made cut, butterfield bermuda championship (Pro)
Runner-Up, European Amateur
Åberg turned heads by winning the Jones Cup with a closing birdie, but it was just the beginning of an incredible stretch of golf for the big Swede. He had 11 top-10 finishes — including two shared victories at the Thunderbird Collegiate and the Prestige — and added made cuts in PGA Tour and European Tour events.
Sam Bennett
Madisonville, TEXAS/Texas A&M
Winner, Cabo Collegiate at TPC San Antonio
Winner, The Aggie Invitational
Winner, Old Waverly Collegiate
Bennett won three top-tier college events and nearly added a fourth but settled for second in the NCAA Albuquerque Regional. He capped off his year by winning the men's individual gold medal at the Spirit International as the United States squad ran away with victory.
Eugenio Chacarra
Spain/Oklahoma State
Top Individual, European Amateur Team Championship
Palmer Cup Team International 4-0 Record
Runner-Up, Men’s NIT
A constant presence on leaderboards wherever he played. Between the Palmer Cup, NCAA Match Play and European Amateur Team Championship, Chacarra went 7-0-1 including a singles win against Pierceson Coody in the Palmer Cup. He registered nine top-10s, including beating a stacked field in the stroke-play portion of the European Amateur Team Championship.
Pierceson Coody
Plano, TEXAS/Texas
Winner, George Hannon Collegiate
Semifinals, Western Amateur
Walker Cup Team USA 2-1 Record
Coody went 5-2 between the Walker Cup and Palmer Cup, won a major college tournament, collected seven top-10s and reached the semifinals of the Western Amateur. He left no doubt that he deserves to be among the top amateurs in the world.
Louis Dobbelaar
Australia
Winner, North & South Amateur
Winner, Dogwood Invitational
Winner, Australian Amateur
Dobbelaar turned pro after making the match-play bracket in the U.S. Am, but his final summer as an amateur included a clutch North &South Amateur victory against hometown favorite Jackson Van Paris in the final match and a solid win at the Dogwood. Given his Australian Amateur triumph and the fact he worked hard to play a full amateur schedule, Dobbelaar earned his first-team honors.
Nick Gabrelcik
New Port Richey, FlORIDA/North Florida
Semifinalist, U.S. Amateur
Phil Mickelson Award Winner NCAA D-I Freshman of the Year
Winner, The Hayt
Was it a fluke that Gabrelcik won three times in his freshman campaign for the little-known University of North Florida? It doesn’t look like it. Gabrelcik followed up his Phil Mickelson Award-winning performance with a top-10 at the Southern and a semifinals appearance in the U.S. Am, making him one of the standout amateur stories of the year.
Joe Highsmith
Lakewood, WashINGTON/Pepperdine
Winner, Western Intercollegiate
NCAA Match-Play Team Champion 3-0 Record
Runner-Up, Pacific Coast Amateur
The emotional leader in Pepperdine’s NCAA Championship run, Highsmith won a big college event and had eight top-10 finishes in 2021. His summer included qualifying for the U.S. Open, a runner-up at the Pacific Coast, a quarterfinals appearance at the North & South, a round-of-16 appearance at the Western and reaching the round of 32 at the U.S. Am.
Keita Nakajima
Japan
Winner, Panasonic Open (Pro)
Winner, Japan Amateur
Winner, asia-pacific amateur
Nakajima is now a mainstay as the top-ranked amateur in the world, getting there with performances like winning a Japan Tour event and the Asia-Pacific Amateur. There are massive, Hideki Matsuyama-esque expectations for the rising young star.
John Pak
Scotch Plains, new jersey/Florida State
Nicklaus, Haskins and Hogan Award Winner
Winner, Calusa Cup
Top 5, NCAA Championship
What else can be said about John Pak? The former Florida State University senior who turned pro after the NCAA Championship took home just about all of the hardware he could during a season where he never finished outside the top 12 in his 10 collegiate starts.
James Piot
Canton, MichIGAN/Michigan State
Winner, U.S. Amateur
Round of 16, Western Amateur
Winner, Hoosier Collegiate Invite
It wasn’t just that Piot won five of his six matches at the U.S. Am without seeing the 18th hole, or that he reached the round of 16 at the Western Amateur. It was his 12 top-10 finishes, which included a win at the Hoosier Collegiate Invite and a tie for ninth at the Southern, that made him worthy of a first-team All-Amateur selection.
David Puig
Spain/Arizona State
Winner, Southwestern Invitational
Winner, The Amer Ari Invitational
Top 5, European Amateur
Puig started his 2021 with back-to-back victories and then continued on a tear, totaling 10 top-15 finishes up until the fall college season. Among Puig’s biggest accomplishments, he went 3-1 in the Palmer Cup, recorded a top-5 in the European Amateur, made the cut in a European Tour event and was sixth in the individual portion of the European Team Championship.
