The Strokes Gained statistic is all the rage among tour professionals for how it helps evaluate and ultimately improve their play. Best described as a quantitative measurement tool, Rory McIlroy has identified it as “the best stat, by far, that has come into our game.” And his peers at the highest levels of competitive golf are just as enthusiastic.
Thanks to a new, Strokes Gained analytics feature to its Caddie app, Arccos is now giving recreational players a way to look closely at their numbers and determine how they, too, can “play smarter and lower their scores.”
According to officials at the Stamford, Connecticut-based concern, Strokes Gained Analytics is the first platform to allow a player to select any target handicap and measure his or her performance versus that goal across every facet of the game. Whether driving or approach shots, for example. Chipping or putting. Even bunker shots, and saves. SGA shows a player’s overall game stats with trend and scoring analysis as it also supports “deep dives” for all performance segments by individual rounds or customizable periods. And it does so by highlighting a player’s top three strengths and weaknesses while also offering tips from top golf instructors.
“This is a significant leap forward in golf analytics,” said Sal Syed, founder and chief executive officer of Arccos. “Finally, amateurs will have easy access to SGA insights that are better than what is available to most tour pros.
“This is only possible due to the power of our custom (artificial intelligence) neural network fueled by an on-course data set that has culled information from more than 300,000 golfers around the world. We take complex data and simplify it. The result is unmatched personalized insights for golfers of all skill levels as well as their coaches and club fitters. With this information, they will be on a clear path to improvement like never before.
As an example, Syed explained that a 10-handicap player who wants to be a 5 is five shots worse than his or her target. Strokes Gained Analytics will tell where the 5-handicap is gaining those strokes versus the 10-handicap.
