Transferring out of the PGA Tour’s free-agent group, Jason Dufner signed a multiyear partnership with Cobra before the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Dufner has played a Cobra King F9 Speedback driver most of this year and uses a mixed set of Cobra Kings irons and wedges, so this one came as little surprise.
Two of the brand’s most prominent players played a role in Dufner’s commitment.
“The success of Rickie (Fowler) and Bryson (DeChambeau) over the past few years with Cobra equipment certainly piqued my interest in the brand,†Dufner said. “I had been testing a variety of products over the past year, and Cobra has proven to be the best for me.â€
With the U.S. team finalized for the Presidents Cup, it’s worth noting the similarities and differences in equipment setup for each player. In terms of golf balls played, seven of the 12 American competitors are playing a Titleist Pro V1 or Pro V1x. Three of the remaining five play Bridgestone Tour BX or Tour B XS. Dustin Johnson (TaylorMade TP5x) and Xander Schauffele (Callaway Chrome Soft X) are the two exceptions.
The Americans also will bring an array of putters to the competition. Five players use a Scotty Cameron and three play an Odyssey, while the remaining four are a SIK Pro C (DeChambeau), a Piretti Elite (Tony Finau), a TaylorMade Spider Tour Black (Johnson) and a Bettinardi Kuchar Model 1 Arm Lock (Matt Kuchar).
In the category of rare happenings, Cameron Tringale and Chase Seiffert made holes-in-one in back-to-back groups at the par-3 fourth hole last Friday at the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Making it even more unusual was that they both used the same club, a 56-degree wedge.
