One could say that Belmont CC was due.
Belmont CC carded a final round 16-under 128 Tuesday at Black Horse GC in Seaside to come in at 28-under 260 and win the annual NCGA Zone Championship by two strokes over co-runner-ups Woodbridge G&CC and host Bayonet/Black Horse GC.
It marked the first time that Belmont CC has won an NCGA Zone title since 1979, the year the SONY Walkman made its debut.
This year's rendition of Belmont CC--Keith Johnson, Kevin Wendorff, Alex Flores and George Widjaja--were helped along by a front-nine 61 playing in a format that takes the two best net scores of a four-person team.
Bayonet/Black Horse GC had a final round 131 on its way to a total score of 262. Woodbridge G&CC also came in at 262 after a final round 132.
First held in 1967, the NCGA Zone Championship is a four-person team event for Regular Clubs. Fourteen regional championships are staged at Poppy Hills and Del Monte GC—scores are based on the two best net scores of the four-person team-- with the champion and runner-up of each regional qualifying for the final championship.
