One of golf’s good guys finally got to taste victory. And he got to share it with friends and family.
Twenty-five-year-old Sahith Theegala, a Southern California native, shot a final round 4-under 68 for a two-shot win at the annual PGA Tour Fortinet Championship at Silverado Resort in Napa.
It marked the first Tour win in 74 starts for Theegala, who was followed by nearly three dozen family members.
“It doesn’t feel real. It’s probably not going to set in for while,” said Theegala, who finished at 21-under 267 on Silverado’s North Course. “But man, that was a lot of good golf, and that was some of the most fun I’ve ever had in my life. I had so many family and friends cheering me on, and just the support I have is mind blowing. I go to bed at night these last few days and I’m like, I can’t believe how many people are cheering for me and rooting for me.”
Theegala was in the running at last year’s RSM Classic but came up just short. He’d fail to convert a birdie opportunity leaving him in a tie for second place.
This time, Theegala left nothing to chance, making birdies on three of his first five holes. No one got close the rest of the way.
“No matter the good golf or bad golf, they just have my back. It’s a team win,” said Theegala said, who was in part joined by his mom and dad on the 18th green. “It’s not just a win for me, it’s a win for the whole family.”
