The first time John Wood went wolf watching he drove 16 hours from his home in Sacramento to Yellowstone National Park and slept in his car for an hour before witnessing the Junction Butte pack in action.
“I’m addicted to it,” he says. “Sometimes you see 50 wolves in a day and taking down an elk and other days you might see two or three jumping out of a bush, you never know. But I kind of feel like that’s my tribe now. I go there so often that I’ve become part of the community.”
The 53-year-old Wood is a longtime member of another tribe, the caddie tribe, having spent more than two decades on the bag for the likes of fellow Sacramento native Kevin Sutherland, Hunter Mahan and Matt Kuchar before seamlessly transitioning into his current role as on-course reporter for NBC Sports/Golf Channel.
“I’ve avoided getting a real job my entire life,” he jokes.
Wood, who lived for baseball as a kid and still is a devoted San Francisco Giants fan, discovered golf in high school and was recruited to play at Sacramento Jesuit. He later walked on the golf team at Cal-Berkeley in 1987 but decided to walk away from both the team and school after one year. “I was just burnt out on everything,” Wood says.
