San Antonio resident Colby Harwell had knocked on the door at the annual Stocker Cup before.
In two of the last three previous years, Harwell had a top 10 finish and a top 5 finish in the prestigious amateur event.
This time, he broke through.
Harwell posted a final round 2-under 70 in late October at the Preserve Golf Club in Carmel to win the Cup with a 54 hole total of 9-under 207. He’d defeat Jimmy Castles, a regular in NCGA events, by two strokes.
“I was never able to close the deal,” Harwell told AmateurGolf.com.”
The big difference for Harwell was a front-nine 31 in the final round. On the par-5 8th, he’d chip in for eagle.
‘I figured at that point, it was my tournament to win or lose,” Harwell said.
The annual event is played in honor of the late Peter Stocker, who was instrumental in the development of Santa Lucia Preserve, site of the The Preserve GC.
