Being outdoors on the course all day is great, but getting too much sun isn’t. UV exposure can add up over time, damaging your skin and putting you at risk for skin cancer. As the exclusive health care sponsor of the Colorado Golf Association, we understand the importance of prevention and early detection when it comes to skin cancer. Here are 3 things you can do to catch skin cancer early:
1. Know your risk. You may be at a higher risk for skin cancer if you have:
A personal or family history of skin cancer
A history of serious sunburns or prolonged sun exposure
High number of moles all over your body
2. Check your skin from head to toe. Performing regular self-checks every month helps you spot abnormal moles or marks. When doing a self-check, remember the ABCDE rule of concerning issues:
Asymmetry: When one half of the mole or mark looks different in shape than the other half
Borders: Edges that are blurry, irregular, or uneven on the outside of the mole or mark
Color: A variety of colors or shading in one mole or mark
Diameter: Anything larger than 6 millimeters in diameter, or about the size of a pencil eraser
Evolving: A mole or mark which changes in shape, size, color, or texture over time
Small changes in your skin are normal over time. However, if you notice any of the above or aren’t sure about one of your moles or marks, make an appointment to have your doctor examine them.
3. Get screened. If you have a high risk for skin cancer or find a suspicious skin issue during a self-check, your doctor may recommend a full-body skin screening, as well as refer you to a dermatologist. Screening is the best way to catch skin cancer early, when it’s easiest to treat.
