The Colorado Golf Association is excited to introduce our three USGA P.J. Boatwright interns for 2025: Sam Hying, Chris Lavoie, and Alyson Kinzel. Each of them brings a unique background and passion for golf, and we are thrilled to have them as part of the CGA team.
Established by the USGA in 1991, the P.J. Boatwright Jr. Internship Program provides individuals interested in golf administration with valuable hands-on experience. The program is designed to assist state and regional golf associations while giving interns the opportunity to explore careers in the golf industry. Responsibilities vary from association to association, but all interns gain exposure to tournament preparations, administration, and post-event operations.
The program is a true test of patience, initiative, and decision-making, offering interns a deep dive into the world of amateur golf. To be selected, individuals must demonstrate strong managerial potential and a genuine interest in the sport. Upon completion, both the intern and the association provide evaluations to the USGA.
Sam Hying – Communications Intern
Hailing from Castle Rock, Colorado, Sam Hying attended Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, where he studied Marketing Communications and Business Analytics. During his time there, he played for the men’s soccer team and was an active member of SAE. While he loves the game of golf, he admits that sometimes it doesn’t seem to love him back! As the Communications Intern, Sam will assist with digital content creation, social media, and storytelling efforts for the CGA.
Chris Lavoie – Tournaments Intern
Chris is originally from Upton, Massachusetts, a small town west of Boston. He began playing golf in high school, quickly falling in love with the sport and competing all four years. His passion for the game led him to work at Shining Rock Golf Club, where he assisted with junior camps and clinics. Chris earned his B.S. in Sport Management from North Carolina State University in December 2024, with minors in Spanish and Economics. Before joining the CGA, he completed a three-month Boatwright Internship with Mass Golf, working on prestigious championships like the Massachusetts Open and Massachusetts Amateur. When he’s not on the course, Chris enjoys hitting the gym, relaxing at the beach, and passionately supporting his favorite Boston sports teams. He is also fluent in Spanish!
Alyson (Aly) Kinzel – Tournaments Intern
Aly grew up in Madison, Wisconsin, and recently graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in Communication and Film Studies. She has a strong background in junior golf, having worked as a coach for U.S. Kids Golf and the Arizona Junior Golf Foundation. A lifelong competitive golfer, Aly enjoys playing with friends and family whenever she gets the chance. She is excited about moving to Denver, experiencing everything the CGA has to offer, and gaining valuable experience in tournament operations. Outside of golf, Aly loves traveling and trying new things.
The CGA is grateful for the dedication and enthusiasm that Sam, Chris, and Aly bring to our team. If you see them at an event this season, be sure to say hello and welcome them to Colorado golf!
