As the exclusive health care sponsor of the Colorado Golf Association, we at Kaiser Permanente know that golf can be part of a healthy, active lifestyle. At the recent CGA Women’s Summit, our urgent care physician Heidi Clune, MD, explained why she encourages her patients to pursue golf.
“Golf requires you to get your steps in,” she says. Walking strengthens the heart and can help maintain bone density, “especially if you’re carrying a heavy golf bag.”1 It can also keep your joints healthy and pain-free as you age. Dr. Clune noted a study that found women who participated in more than 7 hours per week of moderate physical activity decreased their risk of breast cancer.2
The benefits of golf go beyond physical movement. Being outdoors and in nature is also good for your health. According to Dr. Clune, “Being around grass, trees, water, and birds can lower your blood pressure, which can be key in preventing heart attacks and strokes.”3
Finally, golf’s social aspect has a strong, positive impact on health, too. Dr. Clune emphasized that people with a healthy social life are less likely to have high blood pressure and are less likely to be overweight.4
When patients ask her which exercise they should be doing to support their health, she recommends they be consistent with their physical activity. “I want you doing the exercise that you’re most likely to do,” she said. “If it’s golf, I love it! Just don’t forget your hat and sunscreen.”
