The bedrock of the Colorado Golf Foundation was forged around the idea that life skills and character are built through the game of golf, and exposure to these embedded pillars will only benefit those who participate.
But participation can be a struggle, especially in a game rife with failure and numerous barriers for entry. It requires innovative models to shift this paradigm, and with delight the Colorado Golf Foundation is proud to both spotlight and support the Colorado Section of the PGA and their PGA Reach Foundation for their work to create new pathways for junior golfers.
This year, the Colorado Golf Foundation awarded a $25,000 grant to the Colorado Section as a continued partnership in our shared mission of growing youth access to the game. With their Player Pathway model, the Colorado PGA has created three strategic entry points for junior golfers to gain both learning and playing opportunities, using golf as a vehicle for instilling values of integrity, honor and patience. We are thrilled to share more below!
The Junior Development Series (JDS) is designed as a way for juniors to gain a competitive golf experience in a more relaxed and fun environment. The JDS offers a non-intimidating, FUN, focused junior golf environment purposed to foster friendships, inspire commitment and offer guidance. This level prioritizes education, exposing players to competition while teaching the rules in an abbreviated tournament format, ensuring players walk away with a positive experience.
The Junior Player Series (JPS) is the flagship level of our programs. It is designed to serve juniors with a wide range of playing abilities, from juniors that have advanced through the Junior Development Series to those looking to earn an invite into the Junior Cup Series. Players will strive to improve their games while gaining competitive experience. Juniors compete within their age divisions and earn points for the Player of the Year standings. As the most popular level of competition, juniors at this level are continuing to hone their on-course skills while striving to reach greater personal and athletic heights within the game.
Lastly, the Junior Cup Series (JCS) is by invitation only. The Cup Series will provide an alternative opportunity to top junior golfers to hone their skills in a local competitive environment. JCS events will be submitted for the possibility of earning AJGA stars.
In a new collaboration to provide access for juniors who otherwise may not afford entry into this valuable competitive space, the Colorado Golf Foundation supported a grant to the Colorado Section of the PGA for families to apply for financial aid to play in tournaments on the COPGA Junior Tour. Applications are open now, and not only will these grants provide opportunities for families to have access to tournaments, but the Colorado PGA will also work with families to provide the necessary equipment to get on the course as well.
Together, we are opening pathways for all to learn what this wonderful game has to offer!
