Every year, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) selects a theme for the year’s Black History Month in February. For 2023, the theme is Black Resistance. Using the Oxford English Dictionary, see if you can find the earliest use of the term, which may have a slightly different spelling.

Your library card also gets you access to thousands of newspapers. Some databases have curated collections, such as Access World News’s “Black Life in America.” See if you can find the first appearance of the word “resistance” in the newspapers, using both spellings from question one.
