For years, attending ICAST has been on my trade show bucket list. As the largest fishing trade show in the country, organized by the American Sportfishing Association (ASA), it provides a showcase of the latest and greatest in fishing products and innovations. This year marked the 67th annual ICAST, and thanks to my recent move to the Orlando area, I finally made it!
The excitement was tangible as I stepped into the vast exhibition hall, surrounded by fellow fishing enthusiasts, industry experts, and representatives from top brands as well as brand new brands. This year's show did not disappoint. An impressive array of new products was unveiled, from state-of-the-art fishing gear to innovative accessories designed to enhance every angler's experience.
On Tuesday, I was given a tour of the “On the Water” event by ASA Communications Manager, Rob Shane. It was HOT outside, and while I wasn’t thrilled to be sweating that much, it was comforting to see everyone else was feeling the heat too.
Fitzgerald Rods
After the tour, I explored a bit on my own and discovered my first favorite product: the all-new redesigned Stunner Reel by Fitzgerald Rods. This classy yet tough reel can handle whatever taps your line, even in tough conditions and elements. Salt-rated and boasting a lightweight yet advanced design, the Stunner is a reel you can rely on. Casting with it was a dream—smooth and effortless. The Stunner truly lives up to its name! Fitzgeraldrods.com.
Isle
The next product to catch my eye, was the 12’6’ Flywater Micro-skiff Kayak by Isle. As far as kayaks go this is a top contender for my heart. Sleek and incredibly stable, I know getting on and off the craft will be simple and safe. Featuring ISLE’s patented composite inflatable construction, (3-5X more rigid and durable than typical inflatables giving you confidence when moving through shallow waters. Outfitted either for solo or tandem trips, you can use either oars or up to a 5HP motor. This is one of the most versatile and sturdy kayaks I found at the show. www.islesurfandsup.com
Can-N-Rod
What is a fishing trade show without nifty new gadgets? Well, as I walked by the Can-N-Rod booth, the owner, Craig Garcia, asked if I wanted a demonstration. Of course! The Can-N-Rod is an ingenious device with several patents for transporting your fishing rods without them getting tangled and without having to disassemble them each time you move. The floating base keeps your rods and reels from sinking in case they are dropped in the water and the lock plate secures your gear with a quick turn of the plate. A great tool for steadying as you are adding tackle, and the ease of transportation is unbeatable. www.cannrod.com
Wetlands Apparel
While navigating a sea of stretchy SPF 50 turquoise and gray long-sleeved shirts, the Wetlands booth caught my eye. "Wow, these are beautiful! I know what my family is getting for Christmas!" I thought. Rory Hilton Todd, the artist behind these creations, “Starts with a simple sketch that evolves into intricate illustrations, making the designs seem to swim right off the fabric.” To quote their website.
These MADE IN AMERICA performance shirts are not only stunning but also a meaningful addition to your wardrobe. There was quite a buzz in the booth and for a company just two years old, the brand is HOT. Wetlands donates a percentage of every sale to local marine, beach, and wetland conservation efforts. Do good while looking good! Check them out at www.wetlandusa.com.
Costa
There were several things I liked in the Costa booth, but I LOVED the new Grand Catalina sunglasses. Originally introduced in the late 80’s, these aviators, have been reimagined and updated with the newest materials and construction. Sweat management channels, vented adjustable nose pads, removable side shields and seamless surfacing bring this retro inspired product to the modern age. The sunglasses are available in multiple configurations and glass styles, are made with bio-based material and can be ordered in your prescription. Take a look at www.costadelmar.com/en-us
I gained valuable insights into the current state of the fishing industry, explored innovative products, legislative challenges, and ongoing conservation efforts. I'll be delving into these topics in upcoming articles. Plus, I had the pleasure of meeting some of the most passionate and friendly individuals in the fishing community."
