A nonprofit consortium sponsored by a variety of public and private sources, UNAVCO facilitates geoscience research. It offers 11-week, full-time paid internships that put students on a team working on specific projects in geoscience and geodesy. Projects offer real-world experience in a variety of STEM roles related to the intern’s major or career goal.

The AISES Internship Program provides students with applied work experience and an opportunity to explore career options. In partnership with AISES, BMM Testlabs offers a paid, 10-week summer internship to eligible students. BMM Testlabs is the world’s oldest private independent gaming laboratory, providing testing, training, quality assurance, and other services to the regulated gaming industry, with 14 offices in 13 countries. Interns assist test engineers as part of a team responsible for assessing gaming technology integrity, accountability and functionality, performing statistical analysis of gaming device and game probabilities, reviewing gaming device and system source code, and assisting with the development of testing procedures. The goal of the HERS Institute is to study climate and environmental change in Indigenous communities. The eight-week paid internship prepares tribal college students for advanced study to meet the challenge of those changes while promoting Indigenous research and drawing on the traditional knowledge of Native peoples. The internship is a collaboration of Haskell Indian Nations University, the University of Kansas, NSF Kansas EPSCoR Program, HERS, and the Center for Indigenous Research, Science, and Technology. During a 12-day, field-based curriculum, Native Explorers focuses on the disciplines of anatomy and vertebrate paleontology to provide off-campus activities for students as they work side-by-side with Native American scientists, physicians, and graduate students. Themes covered during this annual program include climate change, evolution, comparative osteology, stratigraphy, mapping, healthy lifestyles, and Native culture. Selected applicants receive full funding and are eligible to earn college credits. (There’s also a Junior Explorers option for students between the ages of six and 18, also offered through the University of Oklahoma.)

For more than five decades this college-readiness program has enabled high school students to experience campus life during two- to four-week sessions taught by college professors. One of the oldest STEM internships in the country, the National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT)-USGS Cooperative Summer Field Training Program accepts students from all STEM disciplines. Participants are nominated by the director of their campus-based geoscience field camps (a standard in the education of geoscientists), a field instructor, or GIS credentials and matched by USGS scientists with paid programs lasting 10–12 weeks. Projects may be based in the field, in the laboratory, or both, and some projects continue in subsequent years.
