Green Bay, Wisconsin
Cort Condon Hall is the first new residence hall to open on the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay’s campus in more than 12 years and, at four stories high, it is the largest residence hall that the university has ever built. Opened in August 2024, the hall offers 200 beds in two- and four-person suite-style apartments tagged for second-year students. Each has a kitchenette, shared bedrooms, and a private bathroom. The hall also provides ample lounge space, game areas, study space, and meeting space.
“My favorite part of the building is the focus on creating a variety of different community spaces throughout,” says Kelly Thacker, executive director of housing and residential education. “There is a room that is intended to be a quiet space, two open conference rooms, and different lounges outfitted with various furniture where students can collaborate. Additionally, the first floor has a kitchen, pool table, and various tables and sitting areas for people to enjoy. Every time I have been in the building, I have noticed how many students are using these spaces.”
The hall was also built with efficiency and sustainability in mind. It has high-efficiency water heaters and low-flow aerators to save on water usage, as well as high-efficiency boilers and air-cooled chillers. There are energy-saving electrical features throughout the hall and a connection for a solar panel system that can connect up to 32 panels.
A dedication ceremony was held on September 10, 2024, to honor Gerald C. “Cort” Condon, Jr., for whom the hall is named. Condon is chairman of the board for University Village Housing, Inc., a private, non-profit corporation created specifically to develop affordable student housing at the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay. Condon is a 1969 university graduate who has worked in and supported area businesses in northeast Wisconsin throughout his career. —Camille Perlman
