This private beach home is an elegant montage of sleek, smooth textures and subtle woodgrains. The home was designed by architect Christian Foyd of Bo Form Architectural Design / Consulting Services in BC for an active couple with three sons. Upper Canada Forest Products supplied the distinctive paneling throughout this stunning home.
Located on a bluff overlooking Cadboro Bay, an inlet near the southern tip of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada, the home features modern architecture and biophilic design techniques that make the forms, patterns, and the very essence of nature palpable throughout its interior. An emphasis on neutral colors and natural materials echoes the tones of the beach and reflects respect and reverence for the environment.

IN KEEPING WITH THE PRISTINE, NATURAL ENVIRONMENT, THIS HOME OVERLOOKING THE OCEAN WAS DESIGNED BASED ON BIOPHILIC PRINCIPLES, MAKING THE BEAUTY OF THE OCEAN THE FOCAL POINT IN EVERY ROOM.
Ten-foot European Oak veneered panels accentuate the ceiling height, complementing the effect of the large windows. To sustain a clean look with unbroken lines, cabinets and shelves are hidden behind large oak panels. The home’s low furniture, neutral tones, and natural textures create a casual and serene mood in harmony with the scenery outside. Locally sourced pared-back materials highlight the family’s collection of midcentury Canadian art.
“We wanted to bring peacefulness to the natural environment inside,” Falkenberg said. “Large open spaces and expansive views could’ve easily felt vacuous using a minimalist approach. The trick was to balance clean lines with subtle details that add just the right layer of warmth. When it came to detailing, we drew a lot of inspiration from modern Belgian architects who are masters at warm minimalism,” he added.
“WOOD IS A NATURAL ELEMENT AND AN ORGANIC FORM THAT TRANSMITS THE SENSATIONS WHICH CANNOT BE IMITATED BY ARTIFICIAL MATERIALS.”
LosánNL Florán® European Oak paneling is showcased throughout the home’s interior lending a warm organic touch to an ultra-modern home. Floor-to-ceiling bay windows combined with the linear woodgrain and textile patterns of the wood extend sight lines throughout the home. Measuring 5,400 square feet (501 square meters), the home looks like a bungalow from outside, with its lower level tucked underneath on the ocean side. Upstairs is an open-plan kitchen, dining and living room, a primary suite and two bedrooms, as well as a study, powder room, and mudroom.
“The homeowner had a clear vision–a very pared back, durable and minimalist interior, combined with warmth and subtle sophistication,” said Falken Reynolds Principal Chad Falkenberg, who led the interior design team. “Bringing the ocean inside was a primary goal when designing this waterfront home. The color palette is an extension of the beach: grays, whites and wood—light and desaturated for the Oak millwork and Hemlock ceilings—and continuing with Oak furniture throughout," Falkenberg said.
Specifying LosánNL Florán® M01 Playa Blanca European Oak wood panels enhanced this space, allowing air and nature-inspired colors and naturalistic shapes, creating a heightened sense of connection between occupants and the natural surroundings. Florán® M01 was specified for this paneling application for its consistency, texture, and composition. The M01 classification specifies panels made from European Oak, which tends to maintain a tighter color range than North American oak, making it an ideal choice when color matching is desired throughout a project.
The Losan product line utilizes premium oak logs harvested from a single region in Europe. These logs are then sliced into veneer and processed in Spain before the panels are pressed, sanded, and wire brushed in the Netherlands. The color, Playa Blanca, was a repeated central theme, providing natural warmth, accentuated by a vertical rift cut grain pattern. This highlights the brushed texture and uninterrupted visual pattern of the paneling.
SPOTLIGHT ON: EUROPEAN WHITE OAK
SPECIES: Quercus robur
ORIGIN: Most of Europe and UK
COMMON APPLICATIONS: Cabinetry, furniture, flooring, barrels, plywood, and veneer, as well as interior trim and architectural panels.
CHARACTERISTICS/APPEARANCE: Heartwood is light tan and can be described as a golden honey color. The light brown sapwood is not always clearly demarcated from the heartwood. European oak tends to possess more equal tone and less variation. Quartersawn sections display prominent ray fleck patterns. The grain pattern features long, straight lines with occasional swirls and a coarse uneven texture. It can be worked with hand and machine tools with a moderate to severe blunting effect on cutters. The wood responds well to various finishing techniques.
JANKA HARDNESS SCALE: 1,360 lbf
COMMENTS: European White Oak is popular in both cooperage (whiskey, wine and cognac barrels), as well as in boatbuilding. This is due to both the excellent steam bending properties as well as the unique presence of cell tyloses which result in a almost waterproof material.
“Cadboro Bay is an incredible example of exceptional design combined with precisely the right product and executed to the highest level by talented millworkers, like Jason Good Custom Cabinets of Victoria, BC, who thoughtfully and skillfully crafted and installed this project,” said Matt Mumford, BC Sales Manager for Upper Canada Forest Products. The panels were installed effortlessly using matching components like paperback and edge-banding, resulting in a seamless, holistic finish throughout the home.
“LosánNL Florán® has been available for four years in North America,” Mumford said. “It’s quickly become a sought-after material in high-end millwork and interior design communities. It truly appeals to anyone with a discerning eye and appreciation for wood veneer with a refined color and grain structure.”
This home is an effortless blend of natural stone, audacious art and lighting, and natural woodgrain panels, serving as an immutable backdrop in a one-of-a-kind beachside home. With its oversized windows offering panoramic views of the bay and warm oak wood throughout, this home invites the natural world right to its doorstep.
