The new Heppler putters from Ping are noteworthy for their eye-catching, black-and-copper finishes as well as their use of solid-face technology to promote a firmer feel and sound. While the blade models in the line are made of steel, the other members of the Heppler family are mallets and mid-mallets featuring a combination of steel and pressure-cast aluminum. That advance allows company engineers to reposition weight in ways that elevates their moment of inertia and makes them that much more forgiving.
In addition, both the steel and multi-material models use the adjustable-length shaft technology that was introduced two years ago with the Sigma 2 family. They are designed to provide a firmer feel with less flexing, and they allow golfers to customize length between 32 and 36 inches so they can best fit their stroke and posture.
The Heppler flat sticks are named after Rick Heppler, a longtime Ping employee, who was a teenager when company founder Karsten Solheim hired him in 1966 to help build putters in the family garage. Heppler went on to hold management positions with Ping before his death in 2013.
There are two blades (Anser 2, ZB3) in the line that bears his name, as well as two mid-mallets (Piper Armlock, Piper C) and five mallets (Tyne 3, Fetch, Ketsch, Floki, Tomcat 14).
