AOAC processes for standards development and methods approval continue to evolve to align with the Association’s strategic plan and to better meet stakeholder needs. Here’s what’s new in the revised infrastructure of the AOAC Official Methods of AnalysisSM (OMA) Program.
The AOAC Board of Directors approved revision to the AOAC Expert Review Panel (ERP) Policy and Procedures. Among the revisions are use of nondisclosure agreements for ERP members, suggested language for expected ERP motions on methods, annual review of rosters, and more specification on method review timelines.
AOAC will facilitate an orientation in summer 2024 to familiarize ERP volunteers with the revised procedures.
The AOAC Official Methods Board has approved the concept of OMA chapter editors and is in the process of developing guidance to support periodic review of methods published in the OMA compendium.
In addition, the AOAC Research Institute is developing new method modification guidelines and draft policy for the Performance Tested MethodsSM (PTM) Program. These new guidelines, draft policy, and subsequent processes will also impact modifications for joint PTM-OMA submissions.
For better productivity, AOAC reevaluated the format of Analytical Methods Week (AMW), which was launched in 2019. Instead of designated weeks of consolidated virtual meetings to review candidate methods for possible First Action adoption, AOAC ERP meetings will now be convened when and as needed.
“This flexibility allows for greater participation, so we can have better opportunities to meet and be productive,” said Deborah McKenzie, deputy assistant executive director and chief standards officer.
AOAC is holding an orientation this summer on the latest changes to the OMA Program.
Stay tuned for more changes to come to the OMA Program.
