Registration has opened for the 88th Texas Senior Amateur, set for Oct. 3-5 at McAllen Country Club in McAllen. This marks the first time the prestigious championship will be contested at the historic South Texas venue.
One of the oldest clubs in the Rio Grande Valley, McAllen Country Club traces its roots back to a private 9-hole course that was originally founded in 1930 as the Tippawahee Golf Club. It was renamed the McAllen Country Club in 1946 and expanded to 18 holes in the late 1960s with an original design by Texas Golf Hall of Fame architect Jay Riviere. A classic parkland-style layout, the par-71 course is highlighted by tree-lined fairways, small, push-up greens, and superb playing conditions
The Texas Senior Amateur is open to male amateur golfers who reside in the state of Texas, are age 55 or older as of the first round of the championship and have an up-to-date WHS™ Handicap Index of 6.4 or lower issued through a member club of the TGA. Online player registration can be accessed here, and entries will be accepted through Wednesday, July 23, at 5 p.m.
This year’s championship features a total of 15 exemption categories from qualifying, including exemptions earmarked specifically for eligible top finishers in the upcoming West Texas Amateur (Senior and Super Senior Divisions) and Texas Mid-Amateur Match Play.
For non-exempt players, qualifying sites are now set for eight locations across the state. There will also be a Last Chance Qualifier at a date and site to be announced. (Note: A player who is currently 54 years old may compete in one of the qualifiers, provided they will have reached the age of 55 before the first round of the championship on Oct. 3.)
