David Hust and his wife moved from Alabama to San Antonio in 2018 and he began volunteering for the TGA a week after arriving in the Lone Star State. It was former TGA President Jim Brown that connected Hust with the Association.
“I knew Jim Brown from years past from other golf things,” Hust said. “So, when I knew I was moving here I contacted Jim, who was the president at the time, and he introduced me to the Volunteer Program and I got right in.”
Hust grew up in Alabama before leaving to serve in the U.S. Army for 25 years. Once he retired from military service, Hust moved back to Alabama. It was during one of his many military stops in Monterey, California, that he bought his first set of golf clubs at the age of 37.
“You kind of have to play golf if you live in Monterey,” Hust said. “So, I took the game up over there.”
Hust’s love and passion for the game has since increased over the years. The San Antonian estimates he volunteers at 8-10 TGA events each year and has truly enjoyed the relationships he has built since moving to Texas.
“It’s been a godsend to me because I don’t know how I would’ve found a network of friends so quickly and easily, and particularly people that I have golf and officiating in common with.”
Hust, who also serves as a member on the USGA’s Senior Amateur Committee, said his favorite memory from volunteering with the TGA thus far was the 2020 Texas Amateur at Boot Ranch in Fredericksburg.
“I walked that course four days in a row, which was pretty challenging for a guy who’s 70 years old,” said Hust. “It was an excellent golf tournament for everyone involved. It’s always rewarding to work as a volunteer at events that are put on well and a good production.”
Nowadays, you can find Hust playing golf a few times a month at Randolph Air Force Base. He and his wife, who are both retired Lieutenant Colonels from the U.S. Army, enjoy living in the Alamo City and being near their daughter. They have been married for 48 years, after having first met in Sociology class at the University of Alabama.
We thank David Hust for his many years of service to our nation and for his eagerness to assist in conducting many of the TGA’s elite championships across the state. If you see David at an event this summer be sure to say hello!
