Background/Purpose: School nurses are critical to ensure the safety of students with diabetes. Currently, only 39% of schools employ a full-time school nurse. The coverage in rural areas is even lower. Due to this shortage, a delegation of health care responsibilities from insulin administration to unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) has become a necessary practice to meet the needs of the population.
Methods: This program provides diabetes-specific training to all UAP prior to activating services. The UAP completed pre- and post-training assessments related to diabetes care and education. Parents completed a satisfaction survey to assess the acceptability of the program. Pre- and post-differences were examined using paired samples t-tests, and Cohen’s D. The percentage of parents who agreed with satisfaction statements was calculated.
Results: The UAP (n = 21) had significantly higher competency ratings at the post-training assessment in all diabetes knowledge areas compared with the pre-training assessment, such as recognizing symptoms and providing treatment for hypo- and hyperglycemic episodes, dosing and administering insulin, and documenting and managing diabetes technology (P < 0.05). Overall, parents (n = 21) were satisfied with the services provided. Most parents agreed with the statements about the quality of care provided.
Conclusions: Virtual school nursing programs provide diabetes education to UAP in the school setting, which in turn, improves UAP knowledge of diabetes care and education allowing them to best respond to the needs of students with diabetes. Parents find these virtual programs acceptable, and they are satisfied with the services and care provided to students with diabetes.
