The Journal of School Nursing (JOSN) and SAGE Publications present two writing awards annually to highlight publications that contribute to school nursing practice. The Journal’s Executive Editor, the Editorial Advisory Board, and the Editorial Panel select the award recipients. Papers published in the February through December issues are eligible for the award.
Each recipient receives $500 and complimentary registration to the National Association of School Nurses Annual Meeting. At the meeting’s Annual Awards Ceremony, the awardees are recognized for their achievement. Acceptance in a peer-reviewed journal is a notable accomplishment, and the awards bestow further recognition for exceptional writing.
The JOSN-SAGE Scholarly Writing Award recognizes excellence in writing and contributions to school nursing. The winning manuscript contributes to school nursing by providing research results, evidence for practice or policy development, or a major review of research literature that significantly influences school health policy, improves school nursing practice, or contributes to school health administration and collaboration.
Lucine Francis, PhD, RN, is the winner of the 2024 JOSN-SAGE Scholarly Writing Award for the publication she co-authored with Shafkat Meraj, Divya Konduru, and Eliana Perrin, An update on state legislation supporting menstrual hygiene products in US schools: A legislative review, policy report, and recommendations for school nurse leadership. The manuscript was published in the December 2023 issue of the journal (Francis et al., 2023). A podcast of Dr. Lucine discussing the publication is available from SAGE (Bergren & Francis, 2023).
Dr. Francis is an assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and a faculty Steering Committee member of the Johns Hopkins Consortium for School-Based Health Solutions. Her research focuses on health promotion and innovation in child-serving organizations, particularly in childcare and school settings. She partners with community and governmental organizations to advance child health equity by implementing practical solutions to support child health and school success. Dr. Francis serves as an associate editor for CDC’s journal Preventing Chronic Disease, chairs an early childhood sub-workgroup within the Nutrition and Obesity Policy Research and Evaluation Network, and mentors Johns Hopkins nursing and public health students. Dr. Francis earned an AB in Neuroscience from Smith College and a BS and PhD in Nursing from Johns Hopkins. She obtained scientific training in mental health, parenting, and parent engagement as a Morton K. & Jane Blaustein Postdoctoral Fellows in mental health and psychiatric nursing.
The JOSN-SAGE First Publication Award recognizes the writing excellence of a first-time school nurse author. Manuscripts are judged based on their contribution to thought and practice in school nursing and the writing clarity of the submission. The JOSN-SAGE First Publication Award winner is Frankie Hale, Ph.D., RN. Dr. Hale co-authored the manuscript titled, Effects of the COVID 19 pandemic on school nurses’ resiliency and ability to cope: A mixed methods study in the state of Hawaii, with co-authors Deborah Mattheus, Betty Fletcher, Alexandra Michel, and Holly Fontenot (Hale et al., 2023). The manuscript was published in the April 2023 issue of The Journal of School Nursing. Dr. Hale is an assistant professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) Nancy Atmospera-Walch School of Nursing. Dr. Hale’s scholarly focus is on well-being promotion in various groups (with a particular focus on mind-body-spirit connection). Key areas of interest include well-being and its impact on health outcomes, health disparities associated with wellbeing, and mental health. Current projects include examining (1) external and individual factors impacting nurse wellbeing and (2) new graduate nurses’ perspectives on transitioning into the workforce and the impact of this transition on their well-being. Dr. Hale earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Howard University, her Master of Science from Georgetown University, and her Ph.D. from the UHM.
Please congratulate Dr. Lucine Francis and Dr. Frankie Hale for their achievement! A 2024 Call for Manuscripts has been issued, and we encourage school nurse researchers, leaders, and clinicians to submit their scholarly work to The Journal of School Nursing (SAGE, 2024).
