The Journal of School Nursing (JOSN) and SAGE Publications present two writing awards annually to promote publications that contribute to school nursing practice. The Executive Editor of The Journal and the Editorial Advisory Board and Editorial Panel select the award recipients. Papers published in the February through December issues of the journal are eligible for the award.
Each recipient receives $500 and free registration to the National Association of School Nurses Annual Meeting. At the meeting, the awardees are recognized for their achievement. Acceptance in a peer-reviewed journal is a notable accomplishment and the awards bestow further recognition for exceptional writing.
The JOSN-SAGE Scholarly Writing Award recognizes excellence in writing and contributions to school nursing. The winning manuscript contributes to school nursing by providing research results, evidence for practice or policy development or a major review of research literature that significantly influences school health policy, improves school nursing practice, or contributes to school health administration and collaboration.
Megan Doiron, DNP, APRN, NNP-BC is the winner of the 2023 JOSN-SAGE Scholarly Writing Award for her publication with Dr. Jessica Peck in the JOSN February 2022 issue titled, The role of nursing in the school setting to lead efforts to impact child trafficking: An integrative review. A podcast of Drs. Doiron and Peck discussing their publication is available from SAGE (Bergren, 2022). Dr. Megan Doiron is a board-certified neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP). She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Texas Christian University in 2006 and her Doctor of Nursing Practice in the NNP track from Baylor University in 2022. Dr. Doiron has extensive experience as a registered nurse providing care to neonates in the newborn nursery, transition nursery, and various level neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) for over 16 years. She recently transitioned her clinical care to an advanced NNP role to expand the services she provides for her patients. Dr. Doiron loves empowering parents to bond with and care for their infants and providing education about their baby’s progressing capabilities. She also enjoys participating in provider education as both a teacher and a learner.
Dr. Doiron’s scholarly interests span medical missions, healthcare policy, and anti-trafficking advocacy. She has traveled to Hyderabad and Bengaluru, India, as well as McAllen, Texas for medical missions supporting women, children, neonates, and asylum-seeking and refugee families, and she looks forward to serving these and other communities in the future. Her current research, peer-reviewed publications, quality improvement, and evidence-based practice projects span a range of topics including point-of-care ultrasound in the NICU, infant safe sleep, human trafficking, pediatric and neonatal palliative care, and simulation in education for nursing and multidisciplinary teams. Dr. Doiron works through interprofessional scholarly teams to advance health outcomes in these arenas.
The JOSN-SAGE First Publication Award recognizes writing excellence of a first-time school nurse author. Manuscripts are judged based on their contribution to thought and or practice in school nursing and the form and writing clarity of the submission. The winner of the JOSN-SAGE First Publication Award is Kirsten Munk, DNP, RN, NCSN. Dr. Munk co-authored the manuscript titled, The impact of education and implementation tools on pre-service teachers’ attitudes about classroom-based mindfulness with co-authors Drs. Ruth Rosenblum, Samantha Blackburn, & Eden Donahue. The manuscript is published in the December 2022 issue of The Journal of School Nursing. Dr. Munk is an Assistant Professor at the California State University, Sacramento School of Nursing and serves on School Nurses of California Foundation Board of Directors. Dr. Munk was a school nurse in Northern California where she conducted the mindfulness project as a Doctor of Nursing Practice student. She had seen educators, administrators, mental health providers, and other support staff grapple with how to provide support for struggling students. As a practitioner of mindfulness and yoga, she wanted to accelerate the adoption of mindfulness practices in schools.
Her program of scholarship includes exploring strategies to improve the mental health and wellness of school communities, particularly those in underserved areas, and exploring the critical role of school nurses as health experts and as part of school-based interdisciplinary teams.
Please congratulate Dr. Megan Doiron and Dr. Kristen Monk for their achievement! A 2024 Call for Manuscripts has been issued and we encourage school nurse researchers, leaders, and clinicians to submit their scholarly work to The Journal of School Nursing (SAGE, 2023).
