I recently fielded a question at a speaking engagement about my position on competing with other charities. But the thing is, I don’t think we should be competing; I believe in collaborating because we are stronger together when we link arms with those around us. Non-profits are all striving to make our communities thrive so why not work together? Through volunteer projects and community outreach events, we at Northwest Federal Credit Union Foundation bring people together, creating connections and strengthening bonds to foster a sense of community and belonging.
The Foundation was created by Juri Valdov, former President and CEO of Northwest and current Chair of the Foundation, to serve as the heartbeat of Northwest. At the core of the Foundation's mission lies the dedication of our employees who volunteer their time and expertise to uplift those around them. Together with our credit union members who donate treasury to support youth in our community, we can positively affect our communities. Central to our success is also the long-time partnerships forged with businesses, schools, and other nonprofits. By collaborating with like-minded organizations, the Foundation leverages resources, amplifies its impact, and reaches even more individuals and families in need. We have provided over $2 million in scholarships to over 400 students, filling critical resource needs and creating financial literacy and career readiness for youths for twenty years.
Initiatives such as our quarterly drives ensure that no family is left behind. Our Food for Kids Drive, which runs through March, will provide hundreds of food insecure elementary school students with weekend meals and snacks to sustain nutrition through the weekend. Kate Brown from Helping Hungry Kids (HHK) recently wrote: “The partnership with NWFCU Foundation and Helping Hungry Kids is integral to our mission of feeding elementary students on the weekends. The Food For Kids drive helps HHK complete meal bags that are delivered to over 600 students each week. We are so grateful to NWFCU Foundation for the food donations each year, and for their commitment to help food insecure students in our local schools.”
Jamie Gadley, principal at Dranesville Elementary, also expressed her gratitude in response to our December Winter Warmth Drive. “Thank you for the care that your Foundation provided for our students with the coat and winter accessory drive. As I hear the winter wind blowing outside, there is peace in knowing that over 100 students are prepared for this weather.”
When I find myself pulling my coat and scarf closer against the cold, I think about those students who waited in line in hopes of receiving a winter coat and I feel good that we can provide this basic want.
The need for collective action and community support has never been greater. By harnessing the power of volunteerism and collaboration, the Foundation is modeling what is possible when we come together to create positive change. We invite you to link arms with us.
