In the first quarter of 2023, balance is the word that comes to mind as we look at an ambiguous economy.
We have several areas of focus this year – internally and externally. Externally we want to ensure our members understand that we have a strong balance sheet and we are well-positioned to weather a few years of uncertainty. We want to ensure that our community is aware of our firm commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace, that our mental health platforms are solidly in place, and we remain ever-aware of cultural issues. Leaders must walk a fine line to balance these areas while internally ensuring that our employees feel valued, happy, and productive.
As an organization built on the premise of people helping people, it is this cooperative and entrepreneurial spirit from which we create and recreate our strategies. Our emphasis on the “journey” extends to our members and employees alike.
Understanding what our members want and need is vital to our success. It allows us to develop strategies for members in various phases of their financial journey. And when we listen to our employees, we can implement innovative programs that streamline or update current processes.
The overarching theme here is humanity. To maintain the balance of business, the view from the top must be human, not divided into members, employees, and community. When we come from this common denominator, our authenticity ceases to become a strategy and is instead embedded into everything we do. This is how we create lasting, lifelong member connections and loyal employees.
Some tips to consider as we move through the year:
Take a breather: Take time to recharge. Recognize stressful moments and take time to recharge as needed. Sometimes it just takes a minute or a walk outside.
Focus on intentions for the day. Give yourself a consistent routine before or after the work day. Think about the day, your intentions going forward, and give yourself credit for a job well done.
Motivation: Be clear on your expectations, open to new ideas, and listen to the people around you - including your family, friends, and co-workers. Make sure you are communicating effectively – and keep those doors open.
Encourage entrepreneurial fever. Think outside the box and encourage new ideas.
Above all, approach each day with enthusiasm and positivity, and it will go a long way.
