Hello and welcome to Riskwise. Once again we have an edition packed with content designed to enhance your knowledge of good practice and how to avoid risk within dentistry. We have a range of articles, cases, and research covering dentolegal topics and issues affecting the dental profession. We have a case study from Dr James Foster, in which he discusses a difficult wisdom tooth extraction, and one from Dr Richard Hartley exploring the thorny issue of demanding patient behaviour.
The work of the MPS Foundation provides the subject matter for two research-based articles. In the first we focus on a fascinating conflict between the doctrine of informed consent and traditional values among dental patients from African communities. The second tackles the growing importance of mental health and wellbeing in private practice. Finally, it is a pleasure to announce that Dr Graham Stokes is joining the MPS Council as the new Chair, the first dentist to do so in our 132-year history. We have an interview with Dr Stokes in which he shares his vision for the future and how this is likely to affect members.
The aim of Riskwise is to help develop the knowledge base and thereby the clinical competence of our members. In other words we hope to enhance your ‘wisdom’. But what is wisdom? Read on to learn some of my thoughts on the matter.
