Dear McDaniel Community,
I always look forward to the coming of spring on the Hill — early clusters of miniature daffodils are the telltale sign of warmer weather on the horizon. But this year, it feels there is something extra special in the air. A sense of optimism and momentum; a campus alive with purpose. It is an especially fitting backdrop for this issue of The Hill, which celebrates academic excellence and innovation at McDaniel College.
At McDaniel, excellence is not static. It is something we continually reimagine — through curricular renewal, bold faculty leadership, and programs that challenge students to connect learning across disciplines and apply it in meaningful ways. You will see that spirit reflected throughout these pages, from the reinvention of our Computer Science curriculum to the launch of the Lumen Scholars program, which builds on McDaniel’s long tradition of honors education while providing every student with an opportunity to take a January Term at McDaniel’s branch campus in beautiful Budapest, Hungary.
You will read about Dean of Graduate & Professional Studies Vickie Mazer, who has led the college in the development of exciting new graduate programs in Speech-Language Pathology and Occupational Therapy, which have already seen tremendous early success. As we prepare to welcome the inaugural cohort of M.S.O.T. students to the Hill in May, Dr. Mazer and her team are continuing the tradition of excellence established decades ago in our graduate and professional programs.
This issue also offers a glimpse into how the college is investing — thoughtfully and strategically — in the future. Through the generosity of alumni and friends, we are strengthening academic programs, supporting faculty excellence, enhancing student opportunities, and improving campus spaces that foster learning and community. These investments are not about bricks or budgets alone; they are about people, possibilities, and ensuring that a McDaniel education remains distinctive, relevant, and transformative.
I hope that as you read this issue, you feel the same pride that I do in the fact that academic excellence and innovation are not abstract ideals at McDaniel. On the Hill, we live these values, renewed each day through teaching, learning, and shared purpose.
With gratitude,
President Julia Jasken
