Stay up-to-date with all team and player news and notes all season long. Go 'Pigs!
LAST TIME OUT: Shaun Anderson posted an exceptional outing, firing eight frames of one-run baseball, to lead the IronPigs to a fourth straight win and series victory with a 5-1 triumph over Syracuse on Friday night. Anderson retired the first eight he faced and had a string of 11 in a row retired later in the game. He gave up just a solo homer for the damage against him. He is the second IronPigs (Drew Hutchison) to go eight innings this season. Dustin Peterson homered in the first and then drove in two with a base hit in the second to buoy the offense.
TODAY’S OPPONENT: David Griffin makes the spot start for the Mets with Jose Butto getting recalled by New York. Griffin has been up and down between Binghamton and Syracuse, recently making two starts for Binghamton, going 1-0 with a 4.22 ERA, striking out 12 in 10.2 innings in his most recent stint at double-A. Griffin faced the IronPigs back on July 28, going four scoreless innings, dancing around six hits.
AUGUSTUS GLOOP: The IronPigs racked up 16 wins in August, their most wins in a single month this season. In fact, it's the most wins in a month for the IronPigs since April of 2019, when they racked up 16 wins as well. The last time the 'Pigs had a better month was July 2018, when they had 19 wins.
THE GUNS OF AUGUST: August was easily one of the best offensive months of the season for the IronPigs. They had seven players with an OPS over .800 (five over 1.000) and five players hit six or more homers. Cal Stevenson lead the group by hitting .333 in the month while Darick Hall paced the pack in homers with 12. Kody Clemens scored 23 times and walked (24) more times than he struck out (21). Dustin Peterson with six homers in the month managed to go deep once every 10.6 plate appearances.
NO HOMER, NO PROBLEM: For the first time since game one of a twin bill on August 23, the IronPigs failed to homer on Tuesday, but still came away with the win, scoring their most runs in a game since August 18, when they homered six times. The nine runs scored without a homer were the second most the 'Pigs have scored in that fashion (10, 5/17@WOR is the most). By failing to homer last night, it snapped a streak of five straight games with multiple homers for the IronPigs. In August, the IronPigs had more games with multiple homers (18) than games with one or fewer (10).
ONE IS THE LONELIEST NUMBER: The IronPigs hit the 2nd most homers in the IL last week at 13, but eight of them were solo shots. The solo homers even came in succession, as Darick Hall kicked it off with a solo homer in the fifth inning last Friday night and it went through Cal Stevenson's solo homer on Sunday. Aramis Garcia broke the streak with a three-run homer in the ninth inning on Sunday.
KING OF THIEVES: Scott Kingery has excelled at swiping bases this year, swiping 22 bags in as many chances. 22 consecutive stolen bases without getting caught ties Kingery for the franchise record with Rich Thompson, who also stole 22 straight bags in 2011.
CHICKS DIG THE LONG BALL: The IronPigs had their second six-homer game of the season August 18 against Jacksonville and then had a six homer day (across a doubleheader) on August 26 against SWB. The 'Pigs had the most homers (56) in the IL in August while they had the 2nd best OPS (.848) and scored the fourth most runs during the month (173). The 189 longballs for the IronPigs on the season is a new franchise record, surpassing the 160 hit in 2019.
GAR-SEE YA LATER: After a week-long dev list stint for the birth of his first child, Aramis Garcia has returned with full on dad strength. He clubbed his first two homer game since June 27, 2018 when he was with double-A Richmond on August 18. In his very next start on August 20, Garcia smacked another multi-homer game. Even prior to the week off, Garcia was playing his best baseball of the season, in his last 20 games Garcia has smacked nine homers and six doubles, slashing .333/.353/.792.
FOR PETE'S SAKE: A career best year for Dustin Peterson got a marquee moment as he clubbed a walk-off two-run homer on August 16. Peterson had set a new career high with his 13th homer of the season on August 6. If the season ended today, Peterson has new career highs in homers (18), OPS (.863), and SLG (.524). He hit his 2nd multi-homer game of the season last Friday, both of them against SWB. He then homered again on Saturday to give him three in the series.
HALL PASS: Darick Hall went homerless over a 14 game stretch for the IronPigs, but since has been on a homer binge. In the ensuing 22 games, he's homered 12 times and is slashing .322/.398/.782. Hall has hit the most homers in the IL during this stretch. He has also homered six times off of lefties, his most since 2019 when he clubbed nine 122 at-bats against lefties (Hall has just 53 at-bats against lefties this season).
EVEN STEVENSON: Cal Stevenson has got his feet underneath him after a whirlwind of trans- actions earlier in the season (traded twice, DFA'd twice). Stevenson ran a nine-game hitting streak from July 22-August 6 and just wrapped an eight-game hitting streak. Since the beginning of July, he's hit all seven of his homers on the season and has slashed .317/.414/.610 with 22 RBI
