Dr. Raymond Floyd passed away on 15 May 2023 in Cody, WY. He was born 20 February 1937 in Lake Charles, LA.
Ray’s enduring contributions to IEEE Potentials stand out in both quality and volume, and they span nearly two decades, which stand as a testament to his unwavering commitment to engineering and education. He started by writing and reviewing articles before joining the editorial board as a corresponding editor from 2015 to 2023. As one of the most active volunteers for the magazine, he authored 59 articles (one in this issue on p. 39), focusing on engineering management, communications, ethics, and a variety of technical issues. He also reviewed a record 266 articles, providing insightful and constructive feedback to authors. In fact, he even wrote an article titled “Reviewing can be educational,” explaining how to peer-review articles for IEEE Potentials (Floyd, 2013).
His journey was one of continuous growth and transformation. Floyd enjoyed a distinguished 26-year tenure at IBM in Armonk, NY, as a senior engineer contributing to NASA’s Apollo program. His relentless pursuit of knowledge led him to earn a Ph.D. after his retirement in 1992. Subsequently, a serendipitous encounter with an advertisement seeking an educator brought him to Northwest College, where he embraced his role as an instructor with unwavering passion.
Ray Floyd’s legacy is one of curiosity, mentorship, and a steadfast pursuit in the advancement of engineering knowledge. Remembered as a lifelong learner, he constantly worked to inspire the next generation, leaving a lasting impact on his family, friends, students, and IEEE Potentials readers.
On behalf of IEEE Potentials and the IEEE community at large, we wish to thank Ray for his incredible contributions to this magazine and to the field of engineering.
