My January “Women in Microwaves” (WIM) column, “IEEE MTT-S MGA WIM Subcommittee: Who We Are and What We Do,” [1] introduced the amazing women serving on the WIM Subcommittee and talked about our goal of building a network of women in microwaves that attracts, scales, and connects and how we are working to achieve that goal. I mentioned two promotional videos inspired by Prof. Rhonda Franklin, chair of the WIM IMS2021 virtual event.
In this article, I’ll tell you more about these videos, which are a must view! The first one, “History of Women in Tech/MTT-S” (https://vimeo.com/matternow/download/718057869/eeeb58a78e), shines a light on our rich history of women in engineering and tells the stories of great women engineers making meaningful contributions beginning in the mid-1920s. These women forged paths that we modern engineers within the WIM space are inspired to follow as we continue to push science and industry forward.
The great and diverse women engineers showcased in the video include both early women engineers and women engineers continuing the tradition of excellence today.
The second video, “WIM Sizzle” (https://vimeo.com/matternow/download/740068903/ef776f884a), highlights that although few in numbers, women engineers throughout history have made huge contributions to our “high-tech” industry. Engineering has evolved and become more welcoming to women as the industry comes to understand that there is strength in diversity and that it is key to solving the most complex problems. As I’ve said many times, we, the engineers falling within the WIM umbrella, and our male counterparts, too, need to keep pushing, and we need to support each other; share our knowledge and experiences; and guide and mentor those coming through the ranks.
