I first met Ross in the mid-1970s when we discovered a mutual interest in the inverse problem. A little later when serving as chair of the U.S. Commission B Membership Committee, I nominated Ross as a member. Ross was elected a full member, an association that continued and grew over the years.
An article titled “Personal Computer Applications in Electromagnetics,” written by Jerry Burke and me, was published in the August 1983 issue of Antennas and Propagation Society Newsletter. The article was based on a presentation we gave at the Houston 1983 meeting and was submitted at the invitation of Prof. Dan Schaubert, who was editor at the time. This article subsequently resulted in a regular column, “PCs for AP,” by me at Ross Stone’s invitation when he had become the newsletter editor. It continued later in IEEE Antennas and Propagation Magazine (APM) as “PCs for AP and Other EM Reflections” with Ross’s kind support. Ross tolerated and encouraged my writing this column on a wide-ranging variety of topics over the nearly 17 years that it was published, for which I am very grateful. There were in addition more than a dozen other items of mine published in APM during his tenure for which he often offered helpful comments. Ross was a valued friend and colleague.
