We would like to give the stage to some outstanding women in our field. So, we asked our colleagues questions that are gender-independent, hoping everyone can learn something useful from their answers, or at least be entertained. Here is what we wanted to learn:
We hope you will find their answers as inspiring and entertaining as we have! It is such a privilege to have these amazing people as our colleagues and professional friends.
Figure 1. Linda Katehi is the O’Donnall Professor of Engineering at Texas A&M University, College Station, TX USA. She was previously Chancellor of the University of California, Davis, CA USA, Dean at Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN USA, and a professor at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI USA. She has over 18,000 citations and an h-factor of 67. Among other recognitions, she is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
Figure 2. Marianna Ivashina is a professor at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden, where she is head of the antenna systems research group at the Department of Electrical Engineering. She has received several scientific awards, including the International Union of Radio Science (URSI) Young Scientists Award and numerous research project grants from Swedish and European funding agencies.
Figure 3. Milica Popović is a professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at McGill University in Montréal, QC, Canada. She received her Ph.D. from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL USA. Her research interests are in biomedical applications of electromagnetics. She and her husband, Mark Coates, a professor in the same department, have two sons.

Dr. Mabel Ramirez is the leader of the Advanced Concepts and Technologies Group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Lincoln Laboratory, a federally funded research and development center, in Lexington, MA USA. She grew up in Utuado, Puerto Rico and graduated from the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez, then received her Ph.D. degree at the University of Colorado, Boulder, CO USA.
Figure 5. Lei Guo is an associate professor with the School of Information and Communication Engineering, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian, China. She received her B.Eng. degree from the Harbin Institute of Technology and her Ph.D. degree from the City University of Hong Kong. She has been a postdoctoral research fellow with the City University of Hong Kong and Poly-Grames Research Center, Polytechnique Montreal, QC, Canada.
Figure 6. Teresa Martin-Guerrero is a professor at the School of Telecommunication Engineering, University of Malaga, Spain. She studied physics at the University of Granada and has been teaching at the University of Malaga since 1991. She is the head of the RF, microwave, and millimeter-wave laboratory in the Research Institute of Telecommunication at the University of Malaga.
Figure 7. Kavitha Arunachalam is a professor in the Department of Engineering Design, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Madras, India. She graduated from the College of Engineering Guindy, India and receiver her Ph.D. degree from Michigan State University, USA. Her research interests are applications of antennas in hyperthermia and medical radiometry, electromagnetic material inspection, and measurements. She is married to Prof. Gopal Gopisetty at the Cancer Institute (WIA), Adyar, India and has a loving daughter.
This is the first in a series of three “Women in Engineering” columns featuring selected interviews. We tried to cover different continents, countries, and technical strengths. We will bring more outstanding colleagues to the stage in the following two “Women in Engineering” columns of this series. Stay tuned!

Nikita (knikita@ece.ntua.gr) is a professor at the National Technical University of Athens, 15780 Athens, Greece, and Irene McCulloch Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Medicine with the Keck School of Medicine and Viterbi School of Engineering, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA 90089 USA. She is editor-in-chief of the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation. She received her M.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees from the National Technical University of Athens and her M.D. degree from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
Zoya Popović (zoya@colorado.edu) is a Distinguished Professor and Lockheed Martin Chair of RF Engineering at the University of Colorado, Boulder, CO 80309 USA. She graduated from the University of Belgrade, Serbia, and received her Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology. She is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
