Combustion safety shutoff valves certified for biodiesel use
Global technology and software leader Emerson has launched its new ASCOTM Series 262 and 263 Biodiesel Valves, the first combustion valves certified for use with biodiesel blended fuel in industrial and commercial boilers in the Americas and Asia. These biodiesel valves make it possible for district heating and commercial boiler burner applications to transition to a more sustainable energy source, simplifying compliance with evolving regulations while reducing boiler users’ greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and carbon footprints.
Biodiesel heating fuel is biodegradable and cleaner burning, producing fewer GHG emissions than petroleum alone. Multiple studies have found that biodiesel fuel can reduce GHGs by 50%–86% compared to conventional diesel fuel. Using non-certified biodiesel automation products in biodiesel applications may lead to a severe reduction in the performance and safety of the valves. This could lead to long-term damage for the fuel train and the impact could range from leakages to a complete loss of process control.
Biodiesel is a corrosive medium that requires specially designed and certified products. As sustainability is a top priority worldwide, regulations and certifications are changing in favor of using biodiesel blends. Underwriters’ Laboratories (UL) recently updated its oil burner standard, UL 428B, to include biodiesel blends up to 20% (B20). Series 262 and 263 valves feature an elastomer that is compatible with B20 and are certified under UL 428B.
The robust construction of Series 262 and 263 solenoid shut-off valves provides long service life and low internal leakage, minimizing maintenance and improving reliability, while the welded core tube offers high pressure ratings for efficient fuel use. Mountable in any position with a range of elastomer options, these compact poppet valves allow tight shutoff that can improve efficiency while reducing emissions and cost. A full selection of explosion-proof enclosures is also available.

Open-source protocols to accelerate methane emissions reductions
GTI Energy has released new open-source methane emissions measurement protocols to meet the urgent need to accurately measure and reduce methane emissions and accelerate the transition to a clean energy economy. GTI Energy’s Veritas initiative is a set of standardized, science-based, technology-neutral and measurement-informed protocols built to assemble methane emissions inventories that are verified by direct field measurements.
Reducing emissions from methane, a potent greenhouse gas (GHG), is one of the most cost-effective and impactful ways to mitigate climate change. In recent years, more than 100 countries have joined the Global Methane Pledge, a critical first step toward achieving methane emissions reductions. In the U.S., the Inflation Reduction Act requires companies to start producing precise measurements of methane emissions and reduce them.
Since September 2021, GTI Energy, along with Highwood Emissions Management and SLR Consulting, has convened dozens of industry, research and environmental stakeholders to engage in a transparent protocol development process complete with diverse viewpoints and perspectives to enable credibility. More than 35 companies partnered with Veritas to shape the protocols’ development.
The GTI Energy Veritas technical protocols cover six segments of the natural gas supply chain, including production, gathering and boosting, processing, transmission and storage, distribution and liquified natural gas (LNG). Protocols for each of the six supply chain segments include:
The design of the protocols is aimed at working together with existing methane reduction target frameworks and collaborations—empowering the industry with real-world technical solutions and consistent data to rapidly scale and accelerate methane emissions reductions.

Connected gas detector with new CatEx sensor
Reliable warnings against gas-related hazards play an essential role in keeping people safe in the workplace. The Dräger X-am 2800 multi-gas detector (FIG. 1) simultaneously measures up to four gases. Users can choose sensors for flammable gases and vapors, as well as oxygen, carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and sulfur dioxide (SO2).
The X-am 2800 is optimized for use with the cloud-based software solution, Dräger Gas Detection Connect. The data recorded by the device can be transferred directly via Bluetooth to a smartphone, and then to the Dräger Gas Detection Connect Cloud. For efficient fleet management, the data can also be transferred directly to Gas Detection Connect using the Dräger X-dock test station to give users secure access to the data at any time through an internet browser.
The newly engineered CatEx sensor is particularly shock resistant and can be configured for flammable vapors such as gasoline, diesel and nonane, or for gases like methane, propane and hydrogen. Moreover, the sensor is especially resistant to poisonous substances.
Because gas detectors are worn on the body, carrying comfort and robustness are just as important as reliability. Due to its small size and low weight, the X-am 2800 can be worn conveniently on a clip. Its large buttons make it easy to use while wearing gloves and the prominent display of the X-am 2800 features a language-free user interface and clearly shows important information such as gas readings, alarms and the time. Additionally, it is equipped with a green status light (D-light) to indicate when the unit is ready for use. Approved for use in Ex zone 0, the X-am 2800 has also been tested according to protection class IP68. Confirmed by a drop test, it withstood a fall of more than 2 m (6 ft) thanks to its resilient design.
Accessories from the popular Dräger X-am series are compatible with the X-am 2800, including the charger, X-dock station and calibration adapter. The durable Dräger sensors and the rechargeable, easy-to-replace power supply ensure the device remains operational for many years. Moreover, the X-am 2800 was engineered with sustainability in mind. The technical documentation and packaging have been designed to save paper, and the number of instruction manuals can be reduced when ordering two or more units in the modular version. Dräger ensures the proper recycling of disused devices.
The X-am 2800 is manufactured by Dräger Safety AG & Co. KGaA. For more information, visit X-am 2800.

BB5 launch complements CPC Pumps International API 610 range
Already well-known for its wide range of niche pumps, Canada-headquartered CPC Pumps International Inc. has extended its product range by launching its first-ever BB5 pump (FIG. 2). Applications for CPC centrifugal pumps are traditionally in the wider refining and petrochemical industries. The addition of the BB5 is particularly timely, primarily because one of its major applications will be in helping to sustainably lower environmental impacts. It will be used in carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) processes that are central to lowering CO2 emissions.
Fully compliant with API 610 requirements, CPC’s BB5 pump has the option to swap out individual stages in the future, giving the customer the flexibility to adjust their hydraulics. This provides each pump with a wide-ranging, advanced hydraulic coverage that engineers tailor to meet the needs for each application.
Part of Atlas Copco Gas and Process, a manufacturer of centrifugal compressors and expanders, CPC Pumps International already has a range of models available, ranging from its OH2 to OH5, VS1/VS6, BB2 and BB3 models. Its BB5 pump expands the range of heavy-duty process pumps for the company. The BB5 line now extends this product range with what the company considers the most robust and extreme of the API 610 offerings.
