NEWS FROM THE TOUR VANS
BROUGHT TO YOU BY GOLF PRIDE, THE #1 GRIP ON TOUR
Since Rory McIlroy signed an endorsement deal with TaylorMade in 2017, he’s been using a custom version of the company’s P730 forged blade irons introduced the same year. The Rors Proto irons – tweaked to his requested specifications – have been in his bag ever since.
Now those same clubs McIlroy used to win 18 PGA Tour events – including two Tour Championships and the final puzzle piece of his career Grand Slam at last month’s Masters – are available to the public for a limited time.
TaylorMade announced last Thursday that sets (4-PW) of McIlroy’s Rors Proto irons ($1,500) will be available and built to buyer’s specs through May 15 exclusively at taylormadegolf.com. You can get them “Rory’s way” with the same Project X 7.0 steel shafts and Golf Pride MCC grips McIlroy uses.
The Rors Proto irons – forged from 1025 carbon steel – feature compact blade lengths and minimal offset. A horizontally milled channel in the cavity back separates mass on the vertical axis into two sections in the clubhead, concentrating mass lower to drop the center of gravity to be able to adjust the trajectory and control of each iron and make them more forgiving.
Some of McIlroy’s requested tweaks to the P730 are thinner top lines on the 7- and 8-irons (a visual preference) and TW2 grooves used in Tiger Woods’ TaylorMade P7TW irons instead of the usual MX9 grooves because McIlroy prefers the way they spin out of the rough.
“RORS PROTO” is engraved in the back while four different colored dots are etched below the “Forged” script on the hosel celebrating each of the major championships McIlroy has won in his career.
