Doug Hanzel won the Society of Seniors Dale Morey Championship in Southern Pines, N.C., last Wednesday.
Hanzel (above), of Savannah, Ga., shot 72-75-71 for a 4-over-par 218 total at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club and Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club. He finished one stroke ahead of John Wright of Fairhope, Ala., and Keith Decker of Martinsville, Va. The competitors played Pine Needles in the first and final rounds, and Mid Pines during the second round.
The victory was Hanzel’s fourth of the season on the senior amateur circuit. He previously won the Senior Porter Cup, the Society of Seniors John Kline tournament and the Timuquana Cup’s senior division.
Edward Hargett, Jr. of Blythewood, S.C., finished fourth at 6-over 220, and Mark Knecht of Paducah, Ky., finished fifth, another stroke back.
Stephen Fox of Barboursville, W. Va., won the Super Senior division. He shot 70-75-72 for a 3-over 217 total and finished seven strokes ahead of Don Russell of Tequesta, Fla.
Ron Johnson, of Walnut Creek, Calif., won the Grand Master division. He shot 70-73-72 to finish at even-par 215, two strokes ahead of Rick Kline. The Grand Masters division played the first and final rounds at Mid Pines and the second round at Pine Needles.
