Take Chevron back to Mission Hills
Sparse crowds at Chevron? This was an embarrassment for the LPGA (“Sparse crowds for Memorial Park’s debut,” April 27, GGP). Clearly the move to Houston was a big mistake. Maybe Chevron offered a bigger purse, but more money is not always the best choice. Also, jumping into the pool seems awkward. The LPGA needs to return to Mission Hills ASAP!

Furyk will be ‘sacrificial lamb’
There is no question that Jim Furyk, the next U.S. Ryder Cup captain, was a good player. You do state his team’s severe beating in his prior Ryder Cup captaincy (“Furyk to captain U.S. in ’27 Ryder Cup,” April 27, GGP) .
But you forgot to mention his personal record. He lost twice as many Ryder Cup matches as he won. Being a past captain and a vice captain four times previously should have given him a little more experience needed to help Keegan Bradley at Bethpage Black last year. Watching those matches, there were a few glaring failures on the players’ parts, which I believe should have been addressed by the captain and vice captains. The players didn’t seem to know, or were not familiar with, the differences between medal- and match-play rules. They didn’t seem to know when to mark the ball, and when not to, unless asked. They also seemed not to understand strategy regarding the order they should play.
The farthest partner from the hole should not necessarily hit first in match play. U.S. players are so accustomed to playing as individuals and not as partners. The captains, if they know, need to teach them. After all the so-called experience Furyk is said to have, he hasn’t worked as a leader. Would any good employer hire an employee for an important position with those credentials?
I believe the PGA is just making Furyk the sacrificial lamb of the next Ryder Cup. And I hope I’m wrong.

Memorable mystique
Nice job capturing the mystique of Bandon Dunes (“Divot: A place like home,” April 27, GGP). For me it’s been five trips in the last 15 years culminating with likely my final visit last May. At then age 74, I went with my brother, my son and his best friend. I equaled or bettered my age at Pacific Dunes and at Sheep Ranch, our final round. Everything about the place is magical!
