I was dismayed to read Charlie Jurgonis’ suggestion that Max Greyserman acted like an “all-about-me jerk” for heading to the 14th tee after holing out for eagle on 13 during the final round at the Wyndham Classic (“It’s Your Honor,” August 19 GGP).
I was lucky enough to be paired with Max during the first round of the 2015 North and South Amateur when he was a student at Duke, and I have enjoyed following his career since then. My experience with Max nine years ago convinced me that he is the exact opposite of the characterization in the letter, and I have seen nothing in the last nine years to suggest that his personality or demeanor has changed since then.
I would have thought that Jurgonis would have considered that Max had just taken a four-shot lead with five holes to go in what could have been his first PGA Tour victory and would have cut him a little slack for doing whatever he thought he ought to do under those unprecedented (for him) circumstances to try to keep his focus.
I was very happy to see Max bounce back from a bad first round in Memphis with three strong rounds to secure his spot in the next FedEx Cup playoff tournament and to qualify for all signature events next year.
