Using a different multi-material construction, engineers at Callaway enhanced the Opus SP+ wedge line to provide more spin and control with a higher center of gravity to help flight the ball lower.
“The ‘plus’ is the big thing here – it’s everything we did in the SP line plus more,” said Brian Herr, wedge R&D manager for Callaway. “We put more weight up top, hollowed out the sole more to create more spin and control.”
The Opus SP+ wedges feature a re-engineered three-piece construction head design with a MIM (metal-injection molding) face and tungsten and cast 8620 steel body to strategically reshape mass to optimize center of gravity location. A 25 percent larger spin pocket allows for 23 percent more tungsten to be placed up in the top line to promote a more penetrating, lower launch. This results in more spin and enhanced control.
A new 17-degree groove angle with tighter pitch spacing delivers more groove edge contact for more consistent spin across a variety of lies. Combined with a deeper cross-hatch laser pattern across the impact-dampening MIM face, it produces enhanced friction for more bite and stopping power.
Opus SP+ ($229.99) offers three sole grinds for low (z), high (x) and medium (s) bounce to fit a full range of players and is available in lofts from 54 to 60 degrees.
