Maxwell Moldovan claimed the Southern Amateur Championship in record-setting fashion, firing 4-under-par 67 Saturday at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Mississippi, for the final round. Moldovan, who will be a sophomore next season at Ohio State, shot 20-under 264 for the tournament after leading wire-to-wire.
Moldovan’s low score at the 115th Southern Amateur shattered the previous scoring record of 270, set by Justin Leonard in 1993.
“I haven’t won a major golf tournament in just over two years now,” said Moldovan (above). “To put myself in a position to do that this week and to play the way I played yesterday and today, it feels incredible.”
After a tight race from start to finish, Bryce Lewis of Hendersonville, Tennessee, secured second place. He carded 5-under 66 for the final round. He shot 15-under 269 for the tournament.
“I fought through the whole day and tried to move up the leaderboard to get as close to first as possible,” Lewis said. “I played the course really well all week, and second place feels great.”
Garrett Barber of Stuart, Florida, finished third after winning a scorecard playoff with Australia’s Connor McKinney, posting 2-under 69 for the day and 14-under 270 for the tournament.
